El nuevo Centro de Educación Ambiental Municipal abrió sus puertas como un espacio que une ciencia, innovación, identidad cochabambina y participación ciudadana para formar una nueva generación comprometida con la conservación. 

Cochabamba, julio de 2026.- Cochabamba dio un nuevo paso hacia la construcción de una ciudadanía comprometida con el cuidado del medio ambiente con la inauguración de Ecolab Atuq, el nuevo Centro de Educación Ambiental Municipal, impulsado por el Gobierno Autónomo Municipal de Cochabamba con el apoyo de la Embajada de Suecia en Bolivia y WWF-Bolivia. 

Ubicado en el histórico Jardín Botánico Martín Cárdenas, Ecolab Atuq abre sus puertas como un laboratorio vivo de aprendizaje donde niñas, niños, jóvenes, familias y la población en general podrán descubrir la naturaleza a través de la experimentación, la investigación y la participación. El centro,inspirado en la riqueza de biodiversidad de los corredores biológicos urbanos, especialmente la serranía de San Pedro propone una forma diferente de aprender: explorando, haciendo preguntas y viviendo experiencias que conectan el conocimiento, la reflexión y la acción. 

El centro cuenta con espacios especialmente diseñados para vivir esta experiencia: un laboratorio de biología donde la investigación despierta nuevas preguntas sobre la biodiversidad; una sala de robótica que muestra cómo la tecnología puede convertirse en una aliada de la conservación; una ludoteca donde el juego promueve el aprendizaje ambiental; una sala multifuncional dedicada al patrimonio natural de Cochabamba; y un espacio colaborativo para que organizaciones, jóvenes y ciudadanía desarrollen iniciativas en favor del medio ambiente. 

Uno de los rasgos que distingue a Ecolab Atuq es su identidad territorial. Su nombre combina Ecolab, que representa un laboratorio de aprendizaje basado en la experimentación, con Atuq, palabra que significa zorro en quechua y que rinde homenaje a la biodiversidad, la cultura y los saberes que forman parte de la identidad cochabambina. De esta manera, el centro integra el conocimiento científico con el valor del patrimonio natural y cultural del municipio. 

La propuesta educativa del centro apuesta por el aprendizaje experiencial, promoviendo la observación, la investigación, el trabajo colaborativo y el pensamiento crítico como herramientas para comprender los desafíos ambientales y motivar a la ciudadanía a convertirse en parte de las soluciones. 

"Ecolab Atuq representa una nueva forma de vivir la educación ambiental. Queremos que cada persona que visite este espacio descubra que conocer la naturaleza es el primer paso para protegerla y que cada acción, por pequeña que parezca, puede contribuir a construir un futuro más sostenible. Este es un lugar para inspirar, experimentar y actuar", señaló Raquel Cabrera, Oficial de Gestión Ambiental de WWF-Bolivia. 

Durante la inauguración, el alcalde de Cochabamba, Manfred Reyes Villa, destacó la importancia de este nuevo espacio para formar a las futuras generaciones en el cuidado del medio ambiente. "Con la inauguración de Ecolab Atuq, Cochabamba fortalece su compromiso con la educación ambiental y con la formación de ciudadanos capaces de valorar y proteger su patrimonio natural. Este será un espacio abierto para aprender, compartir conocimientos y construir, entre todos, una ciudad más sostenible." 

Con esta inauguración, Cochabamba incorpora un espacio que busca acercar la ciencia, la innovación y la educación ambiental a la ciudadanía, fortaleciendo el vínculo entre las personas y la naturaleza. Ecolab Atuq aspira a inspirar nuevas generaciones que comprendan que conservar nuestro patrimonio natural comienza por conocerlo, valorarlo y actuar para protegerlo. 

El ingreso al Ecolab Atuq será gratuito para toda la población y estará abierto a partir del lunes 27 de julio de 2026 de lunes a viernes de 8:00 a 16:00 y los sábados de 8:00 a 12:00.

The new Municipal Environmental Education Center opens its doors as a space that brings together science, innovation, Cochabamba's identity and citizen participation to shape a new generation committed to conservation.

Cochabamba, July 2026.- Cochabamba has taken a further step toward building a citizenry committed to caring for the environment with the inauguration of Ecolab Atuq, the new Municipal Environmental Education Center, led by the Autonomous Municipal Government of Cochabamba with the support of the Embassy of Sweden in Bolivia and WWF-Bolivia.

Located in the historic Martín Cárdenas Botanical Garden, Ecolab Atuq opens as a living laboratory of learning where children, young people, families and the general public can discover nature through experimentation, research and participation. Inspired by the biodiversity of the city's urban biological corridors, and particularly by the San Pedro mountain range, the center offers a different way of learning: exploring, asking questions and taking part in experiences that connect knowledge, reflection and action.

The center features spaces specially designed for this experience: a biology laboratory where research sparks new questions about biodiversity; a robotics room showing how technology can become an ally of conservation; a play library where games foster environmental learning; a multipurpose room devoted to Cochabamba's natural heritage; and a collaborative space for organizations, young people and citizens to develop initiatives in favor of the environment.

One of the features that sets Ecolab Atuq apart is its territorial identity. Its name combines Ecolab, representing a learning laboratory based on experimentation, with Atuq, the Quechua word for fox, which pays tribute to the biodiversity, culture and knowledge that form part of Cochabamba's identity. In this way, the center integrates scientific knowledge with the value of the municipality's natural and cultural heritage.

The center's educational approach is built on experiential learning, promoting observation, research, collaborative work and critical thinking as tools for understanding environmental challenges and encouraging citizens to become part of the solutions.

“Ecolab Atuq represents a new way of experiencing environmental education. We want everyone who visits this space to discover that getting to know nature is the first step toward protecting it, and that every action, however small it may seem, can help build a more sustainable future. This is a place to inspire, to experiment and to act,” said Raquel Cabrera, Environmental Management Officer at WWF-Bolivia.

During the inauguration, the Mayor of Cochabamba, Manfred Reyes Villa, highlighted the importance of this new space for educating future generations in caring for the environment. “With the inauguration of Ecolab Atuq, Cochabamba strengthens its commitment to environmental education and to shaping citizens capable of valuing and protecting their natural heritage. This will be an open space to learn, share knowledge and build, together, a more sustainable city.”

With this inauguration, Cochabamba adds a space that seeks to bring science, innovation and environmental education closer to its citizens, strengthening the bond between people and nature. Ecolab Atuq aims to inspire new generations to understand that conserving our natural heritage begins with knowing it, valuing it and acting to protect it.

Admission to Ecolab Atuq will be free of charge for the entire public and it will be open from Monday, July 27, 2026, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
