First contextualized environmental education experience in Bolivia thanks to support from WWF
WWF Bolivia, through its Pantanal Program, has been working in the Bolivian Pantanal since 1997. Its main objective has been to maintain the hydrological processes in the Pantanal and its watershed by promoting the sustainable use of natural resources with emphasis placed on improving the quality of life of its inhabitants.
The experience accumulated over eight years in environmental education in the Pantanal was the basis for WWF, through its local partners FUAMU and PROCESO, to work together on the development of an educational curriculum for the Pantanal eco-region and through which primary school students would be introduced to environmental and conservation concepts yet respecting the Educational Reform which "identifies the need for natural sciences to be a transversal component in formal education."
The publication of the textbook "Curricular diversification for the Bolivian Pantanal", organized in three volumes, was produced in a participatory manner and considered at all times the regions characteristics. It is a technically sound publication and was produced with the active participation of teachers in the region under the guidance of FUAMU (area of expertise in biology and conservation) and PROCESO (educational specialists).
WWF and FUAMU, in coordination with SEDUCA/Prefecture for the Department of Santa Cruz and municipal governments, will distribute the material so that it can be used during the 2007 school year. The publication is also an example that education can be used to recognize, respect and value a regions environmental features.
Background
The challenges faced when developing the curriculum were because:
- It was developed in a participatory manner
- It had to gather and express the needs identified by the teacher’s
- Be technically solid so that it could be approved by the Ministry to be formally used as a guide by the teachers
- Gather, systematize and organize all environmental education work carried out since 1998
- Share systematized information with teachers in 3 districts: Puerto Suárez, Puerto Quijarro and San Matías, receiving impressions, needs and expectations in order to develop a contextualized curriculum
- Develop a draft of the curriculum based on the guidelines of the Educational Reform and for subsequent presentation to educational authorities.
